Blog#4: Jay Pritzker Pavilion

Hi, this is Masako Miyahara. Today, I'm going to introduce about Frank Gehry's architecture. There are many interesting architectures, but in particular, I like the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park in the United States. It is used for a band shell, and it promotes many kinds of music festivals or concerts, and arts events which are held in annual. It’s so huge architecture, so the main stage can host a full orchestra and chorus of 150 members. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion locates on the south side of Randolph Street, and east side of the Chicago Landmark Historic Michigan Boulevard District. It was constructed between June 1999 and July 2004, and it opened officially on July 16, 2004. It can accommodate 11,000 people, including the fixed 4,000 seats and a 95,000-square-foot Great Lawn that can host 7,000 people, and the sound system with an acoustic design which use the crisscrossing steel pipes that support the innovative sound system replicates an indoor concert hall sound experience is the most interesting its feature.

I think the pavilion is so interesting because not only its design, but also the purpose of using it is fresh for me. I had never thought of that there is the concert or art hall in the park! As you can see, people can enjoy many kinds of events relatedly in the pavilion, and it seems a place of recreation and relaxation for the people. If I will have opportunity to visit Millennium Park, I want to see the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and relax in there.

This is the map of Millennium Park.

At night, the puvilion is illuminated colorfully.
